American Indians grew corn (Navajo field, left), potatoes, tomatoes, beans, and other crops that form the basis
for American agriculture. Spaniards and Mexicans (right) introduced cattle and sheep ranching, irrigation, and
commercial fruit growing to America.
America aided the Patriots against Britain.
The Mayflower Compact (left) was the effort of the Pilgrims to bring representative government to America. The
tradition of ruling by majority vote instead of merely by force made the United States possible. The first
Christians to settle in America were the Catholic Spanish (center). They tried to integrate American Indians into
their society. This American Indian built Catholic church in California is material evidence of their efforts.
France's Joan of Arc (right) set a great example for the Patriots with her love of country and her attacks on
British oppressors. She was kind and cheerful, zealous and religious. France and Spain and their settlers in
